Circuit #1 Stanbridge-East and Frelighsburg If you would like to become better acquainted with the Stanbridge-East,
Frelighsburg region, circuit # 1 is the quintessential route for
the challenge-hungry cyclist!
- Your starting point is the Métro grocery store parking
lot on rue Principale in Bedford. Municipal parking is also available
at St-Damien Church.
- Turn left on Du Pont, at the intersection of routes 202 and
235.
- Cross the Zéphir-Falcon Bridge and turn right on de
l’Église.
- Ride to the end of this street. At the intersection, turn left
on Victoria (northbound).
- Stay on Victoria up to the first intersection and turn right
on Duhamel-Riceburg Road.
- This road will take you all the way to Stanbridge-East. You
will notice artist Michael Laduke’s stained-glass studio
on your left
- At the end of Riceburg road, turn right at North Road and then
left on River road. You are now at the Missisquoi Museum; across
the street, take the time to admire the former village church
formerly known as Sainte-Jeanne D’Arc. Today this quaint
white edifice is a gourmet restaurant. The General Store is just
down the road.
- Ride on up River Street to the intersection of routes 202 and
237.
- An alternate route would be: Turn left on route 202 and visit
Les Jardins À Fleur d’Eau (this site is closed at
the moment), a lovely grouping of vineyards and the village of
Dunham. Warning to all, route 202 has a 90 km/h. speed limit.
- Take care when crossing route 237 and keep going in the same
direction. You will notice the apple orchard Verger au Cœur
de la Pomme and Les Caprices du Pré where you can purchase
lovely goats’ milk soap.
- This route takes you into Frelighsburg. Turn right on the rue
Principale toward St-Armand. Why not stop at Sucreries de l’Érable
and enjoy their maple sugar delicacies?
- Once you’ve satisfied that sweet tooth, continue your
trek towards St-Armand.
- After a few hills and valleys, you come to the picturesque
village of Pigeon Hill. Take the time to visit Michel Viala and
Sara Mills’ pottery studio. You will truly enjoy your outing
through this quaint village. Turn right and travel down Guthrie
road.
- At chemin Edoin, turn left and continue on until you come to
the Guthrie covered bridge, built in 1845. At this point, chemin
Edoin becomes chemin Chevalier.
- At the next « Stop » sign, turn right on to Dutch;
this will lead you back into Bedford.
Alternate route: Once on Guthrie Road, take it to the end; there
is a soft right-hand turn and a short distance that leads to chemin
du Ridge. Two vineyards grace this enchanting road, Domaine du
Ridge and Domaine de l’Ardennais. Allow yourself to be transported
to the South of France! Be careful of the wine tasting, you might
decide to stay!
- Once you are reluctantly back in the saddle, ride on and take
a left at the fork in the road. You will notice an old Anglican
church on a hill to your left. Pedal up to the 202. At the junction,
turn left towards Bedford.
- At the «Stop» sign in Bedford, turn right and take
rue Philispburg into the village.
- At the corner of rue Rivière and Philipsburg, the Bed’n’Bedford
and its lovely garden is sure to attract your attention. Tempting
isn’t it?
- A few feet more and you’ll be making a left turn on to
rue Principale.
You are back at your point of departure.
